The refugee crisis in Calais and Dunkirk is presently worse than it’s ever been and help is needed more now than ever. This film is an overview of the present situation and a plea for help.
Since the dismantlement of the Calais Jungle and the fire in Dunkirk, Refugee Community Kitchen is now the only organisation from the UK making food and are currently serving 2500 portions a day.
The refugees continue to arrive, fleeing their uninhabitable homelands – hoping to find some peace and a place to settle. They are living in extremely difficult conditions, they have no services and no safe places. As there are no camps, they are being forced into the woods and wasteland, avoiding the authorities and face continual police harassment.
As some are aware the Dunkirk Refugee Camp, Grande Synthe, was all but destroyed by fire late Monday evening. The phone calls started around 9.30pm and what followed was a tragic and long night where refugees once again had to flee to safety, losing their papers, their belongings – the little they had managed to hold on to was gone.
With the incoming news, all the volunteers from Refugee Community Kitchen arrived at the warehouse at the same time, the lights went on, the gas rings lit, chai put on the boil, flapjacks cut up, more pulses put in to soak, teams formulated, plans hatched, logistics and safety plans repeatedly talked out and constant communication with all other groups on the ground.Continue reading →
Hello fine friends, family and RCK supporters, here’s a small update to keep you all in the loop.
After nearly a year and a half of service and over a million nutritious hot meals made and distributed from our kitchen at the L’auberge des Migrants warehouse HQ in Calais, we had our first official health and safety inspection from the local authorities, triggered by the mayor of Calais. We received the inspection report and although the officials were very impressed with our set up and systems they imposed refinements and environmental improvements that we had to undertake within a time frame of firstly 21 days for medium improvements and 60 days for major works.
Winter is coming and for most of us that means cosy evenings in our warmed homes, snacking on foods from our fridges and cupboards as and when we feel like it and sharing warming stews and hot soups with our friends and families.
Not so for the thousands in refugee camps on Europe’s borders who will be enduring freezing temperatures, scarce provisions and minimal cooking facilities.
Regardless of recent eviction announcements of the Calais camp,
Refugee Community Kitchen is dedicated to continuing the work begun in December 2015 in the Calais and Dunkirk camps where over 570,000 meals have been served to date along with the creation of self-service shops and kitchens. We will provide for these camps and all displaced peoples until we are not needed anymore.
Refugee Community Kitchen is also going mobile this winter to serve the same hot, nutritious meals that every human deserves to others living in camps across the continent.
Travelling with a full mobile catering truck, fridge truck and marquees along with a dedicated team of chefs and volunteers, we will seek those most in need and work with locals and other grassroots organisations and NGOs to enable displaced peoples to eat and cook their own food and prepare meals for their families.

Every day to cook the food we serve to the residents in the Calais and Dunkirk camps we use every penny you donate as wisely as we can.
We are cooking 2500 meals a day at least, with the numbers rising daily.
The cooks are ploughing through huge amounts of food: 100 kilos of dried beans every day 150 kilos of rice every day 150 kilos of onions every day 10 kilos of garlic every day 80-100 kilos of salad every day 20 litres of sunflower oil every day 10 litres of olive oil every day 5 kilos of salt every day 8 kilos of spices and chilli every day
Plus as much bread and fruit as we can muster to hand out every day, all
lovingly prepared by tireless volunteers.
